Stay Indoors Advisory Issued
India has advised its citizens in Kyrgyzstan to remain indoors following violent attacks targeting foreign students. This warning came after some Pakistani students were injured in their hostel during the mob violence.
Indian Consulate’s Statement
“We are in contact with our students. The current situation is calm, but we advise all students to stay inside for now and reach out to the Embassy if needed. Our 24/7 contact number is 0555710041,” the Indian Consulate announced on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Foreign Minister’s Guidance
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar also emphasized the importance of students staying in touch with the embassy.
“We are keeping an eye on the safety of Indian students in Bishkek. The situation seems calm now. Students should regularly update the Embassy,” Mr. Jaishankar stated.
Conflicting Reports on Casualties
Although social media posts claimed that three Pakistani students were killed, the authorities have not confirmed any fatalities.
Targeted Attacks on Hostels
The mob specifically targeted medical university hostels in Bishkek, housing students from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Fortunately, no Indian students were hurt in these attacks.
Pakistan Consulate’s Update
The Pakistan Consulate in Kyrgyzstan shared on X, “Several hostels of medical universities in Bishkek and some private residences of international students, including Pakistanis, have been attacked. These hostels accommodate students from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Some Pakistani students sustained minor injuries.”
“Despite social media reports alleging deaths and assaults on Pakistani students, we have not received any confirmed reports,” they added.
Prime Minister’s Concern
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his worries about the attacks, instructing the Pakistani Ambassador to provide necessary assistance.
“Deeply concerned about the safety of Pakistani students in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. I’ve instructed our Ambassador to offer all necessary support. My office is in constant communication with the Embassy, monitoring the situation,” he shared on X.
Underlying Tensions
This incident seems to underscore the tensions regarding the presence of many South Asian migrants in Kyrgyzstan. There are about 15,000 Indian students in Kyrgyzstan, though it’s unclear how many are in Bishkek.
